Anger Management Activities

We are a society of angry people. If you want to know why Jerry Springer is still on television, tune in for two minutes. You will see yelling, cussing, and hitting. Everyone is angry and is taking out that anger on someone else. We have people killing other people in road rage incidents. We are raising a culture of people who have no idea that they are even supposed to control their anger. Anger is a natural emotion; learning how to control the anger is one of the single most important lessons we can learn.
There are many anger management activities that we can learn. Remember the old ‘count to ten.’ The age old anger control method really works. Rather than answering someone in a snappy or hateful manner, we learn to count to ten and then answer. Generally, the answer will be much more in control. Saying the first thing that comes to our mind often gets us in trouble. Mentally counting to ten can help stop many problems before they start. Sometimes the old tried and true methods are still some of the best.
Relaxation techniques also help with anger control. When you are angry or stressed, you don’t breathe deeply enough. Without enough oxygen in the body, your body starts ‘fight or flight’ response. This makes you feel even worse and pretty soon you are working yourself into a rage. As the anger escalates, the situation may become very tense. A very easy way to stop this cycle is to start breathing techniques as soon as you feel yourself getting angry. Take a time out. Breath from your belly button instead of from your chest. Breath in and out slowly. You might even picture a pretty landscape or the face of your children. Continue the slow but deep breathing until you relax. Suddenly, you won’t feel so anxious or angry.
The Bible tells us to treat people the way we want to be treated. If you treat most people with kindness they will treat you the same way. If this friendliness doesn’t work, keep being kind. It’s amazing how easily you can defuse an angry situation by being sweet and kind. Ever heard of killing them with kindness? This method works every time; well almost every time. When someone speaks hatefully or aggressively to you, smile and speak in a very calm manner. If they are yelling, you should take your own tone down several notches. You will be surprised that they will do the same. Your next answer will be even kinder and lower. You get the picture. Before you know it, you have stopped the escalation of a potentially bad situation.
Often we show anger when we are stressed. Maybe we have a deadline that is driving us crazy or we are mad at our spouses. Using quiet music or exercising can help to alleviate your stress before it turns to anger. You can also meditate or call a best friend and vent. Taking care of stress is a great way to manage anger.
There are many anger management activities that will help you manage anger. Find the best one for you and use it. No one really wants to be angry or to treat people in a angry fashion.
